Manchester, United Kingdom
September 2017
Invited to present research team’s ongoing efforts in the laboratory to find a treatment for the devastating condition of preeclampsia. There, Prof Tong also presented the results of thier first trial just finished in South Africa.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Longstanding collaboration with Professor Andrew Horne to develop an exciting new medical treatment for ectopic pregnancy.
The vision is that just seven tablets (gefitinib) and an injection (methotrexate) could be a radically new way to cure most ectopic pregnancies, allowing most women to avoid surgery.
Stephen first came up with this concept in his laboratory in Melbourne in 2009.
Since 2010, he has partnered with Professor Andrew Horne (at the University of Edinburgh) to test this idea in the clinic. Together, they have now completed three clinical trials.
Currently, Stephen is collaborating with Andrew, who is taking the lead to run a large definitive human trial as the final test of this concept. The GEM3 trial is recruiting women with ectopic pregnancies from over 50 hospitals across the United Kingdom.
If GEM3 trial has a positive finding, this could become the new way that most ectopic pregnancies are treated across the globe. Treatment of this life-threatening condition could become safer, easier and simpler for women.
Munich, Germany
August 2014
Presented the novel concept of a new drug treatment for ectopic pregnancy (gefitinib and methotrexate) to an enormous audience of 6000+.
It is a concept Stephen first came up with in the laboratory with his scientist Ulrika Nilsson in Melbourne, back in 2009. It could allow many women to avoid surgery.
This was an important plenary address as it laid the groundwork for a coalition of UK-based investigators to join forces to start a large human trial to definitively test the concept – the GEM3 trial. GEM3 is now a reality and is currently recruiting women with ectopic pregnancies (see Edinburgh).
It was also Stephen’s first exposure to the improbably huge beers served in Munich beer halls. He only managed to down a pitiful amount of the oversized refreshment.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
October 2018
Invited to present overall strategies how to choose drugs that look promising in laboratory testing, and then test them in human trials.
Cape Town, South Africa
Longstanding collaboration with Dr Cathy Cluver at Tygerberg Hospital to discover a new treatment for severe preeclampsia
This is a unique and exciting collaboration between Stephen’s laboratory research team at based at the Mercy Hospital and South Africa.
Cathy is leading successive major clinical trials to test potential treatments for severe preeclampsia identified by The Translational Obstetrics Group. Stephen’s research team.
Stephen is also part of the clinical trials leadership group that co-ordinates these exciting studies in South Africa.
This is an ideal collaboration. Sadly, severe disease is absolutely rife in South Africa. This means there is a high case load and candidate drugs discovered at Mercy Hospital can be tested in relatively quick succession in human trials.
Washington DC, USA
October 2015
Invited to present the team’s research efforts to develop a blood test to identify unborn babies that are preterm, starved of oxygen and at high risk of stillbirth.
Detroit, USA
October 2015
Invited to visit this world famous research facility and to present an overview of our program of translational research - developing new diagnostics and treatments to tackle major pregnancy complications.
New Orleans, USA
October 2014
At this presentation, Stephen first broke the story of their laboratory discovery (new at the time) that proton pump inhibitors - drugs that are safe in pregnancy – may be an unlikely candidate to treat preeclampsia.
This work led to a large human clinical trial we ran in South Africa (See Cape Town), and two large prevention trials.
Orlando, USA
Since 2010, Stephen’s research team has attended the SRI conference every year. Based in the US, SRI one of the most prestigious conferences in the field and is often hosted in Orlando.
Over the years, younger members of his team have repeatedly won numerous international early career research awards at SRI.
Sao Paulo, Brazil
October 2016
Presented an update on the team’s newly developed research drug screening pipeline, and how it is used to identify new candidate drugs to treat preeclampsia.
Santiago, Chile
October 2016
Stephen and members of his team visited the research unit of Prof. Sebastian Ilanes. This important visit sowed the seeds of a fruitful and ongoing collaboration.
Auckland, New Zealand
Collaboration with Dr Prathima Chowdary to test an exciting concept - possibly the world’s first tablet only treatment for ectopic pregnancy
The hope is that just a tablet or two can replace surgery to treat this life-threatening condition.
The idea was recently discovered in the laboratory at Mercy Hospital by Stephen’s team – The Translational Obstetrics Group.
This exciting first trial of women diagnosed with ectopic pregnancies started at North Shore Hospital in 2018.
Australia
Stephen has been actively engaged in research activities across Australia.
Since 2010, he has had the privilege of delivering over 50 invitations to speak at conferences and events across Australia - Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Fremantle and Perth.
He has active collaborations with researchers across Australia
Since 2010, his team has attracted over seven million dollars in competitive grant funding to undertake their translational research. He has received several prestigious research awards from the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC).
